Nokia's new range of Android phones to be launched today Nokia has launched its first Android-based smartphones, marking a major diversion in its mobile strategy.

The phone manufacturer, which is owned by Microsoft, previously only used Microsoft Windows 8 for its smartphone devices. However, it has launched three new phones -- the Nokia X, X+ and XL -- which will be capable of running some Android apps as well as Nokia's own apps.

The Nokia X and X+ will have four-inch screens, while the Nokia XL will have a five-inch screen and 5-megapixel camera. The smartphones come in different colours and are being targeted at budget smartphone users and emerging markets. The Nokia X costs €90 unlocked while the Nokia XL costs €110 unlocked.

The company said that it is not abandoning Windows as its main smartphone operating system.

The new phones were announced at Mobile World Congress, the world's largest telecoms and mobile phone trade show in Barcelona. Almost 100,000 phone executives and media are expected to attend the event, which will showcase future developments in the mobile technology.
